(KNOCKOUT NATION NEWS – May 25, 2008) The UFC 84 didn't disappoint and here is a brief rundown.
Croatian Goran Reljic (8-0 and UFC debut) gave fans a spectacular come-from-behind victory over Wilson Govea. After getting rocked early in the round, Reljic caught govea with a left hook to the temple, dropping him. Reljic then rained hammer fists and punches until the referee stopped the fight.
Rousimar Palhares’ Brazillion jujitsu caused Ivan Salaverry to tap out shortly after the two-minute mark. Salaverry submitted to an arm bar. Palhares transitioned from his back straight into the arm bar effortlessly.
Shane Carwin of Denver, CO (8-0) relieved Sacramento's Christian Wellicsh (9-2) of his faculties with a brutal right to the chin. The blow snapped Wellisch's head and he sank to the canvas in the heavyweight bout at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Carvin showed remarkable power after missing the mark a number of times. The fight lasted 44 seconds. "Beautiful," Carvin said of his win.
"I am going to go in for the knock out. I am going to beat him so fast," Wanderlei Silva (31-8-1) said before his bout with Keith Jarine (13-4-1). Keith Jarine has the pleasure of beating the legendary Chuck Lidell, but that was of no concern to the Brazillian icon Wanderlei Silva. Silva, who is coming off three losses, appeared focused, confident and in shape. When it was over, Silva demolished Jarine in 36 seconds via a ferocious series of combinations. Jarine was on ground for several moments after the fight was mercifully stopped.
A anaconda choke marked the end of Jon Koppenhaver (6-1) who was rendered unconscious by Yoshiuki Yoshida (9-2) at the 56-second mark of the first round. Jon Koppenhaver made the grave mistake of clenching with Yoshida. He was swept to the floor by a judo throw and Yoshida applied the vicelike choke hold. Koppenhaver never tapped out, but was non-responsive to ref Herb Dean, who halted the bout.
